Spec brief. A video editing educator whose audience of freelance editors has watched every "AI edits it all now" tutorial and is quietly wondering whether their rate is about to be undercut. They don't need another tool walkthrough. They need a different explanation of what a client is actually paying them for.

Why an AI rough cut reads fine and plays wrong
The rough cut comes back in four minutes. You scrub through it at 2x, nothing jumps out, and you send it. Some quiet part of you knows you never listened to a single join.
Here's why it reads fine and plays wrong. An AI model builds that cut from the transcript. It sees the words, a few still frames and a timestamp. It doesn't watch the footage or hear the audio. It has never heard the half-second of room tone before a line, or the breath that makes a cut feel like a cut.
So on paper the cut is correct: fillers gone, retakes dropped, every sentence in order. And it still lurches, because a transcript has no pacing in it. Everything a viewer feels about a cut lives in what the transcript left out.
That's the part a client is paying you for, and it's the part the "fully automated" tutorials never show anyone checking.
Tomorrow: what I hand to AI without a second thought, and the one thing I never do. The split is simpler than you'd expect, and it's why "can't AI just do this?" doesn't worry me anymore.
One job: change what the reader believes they're selling. Nothing is pitched, and the next email is already owed.
